Richard D. M. Nash received the B.Sc. degree in marine biology in 1977 from University College, Swansea, U.K., and the Ph.D. degree in natural science in 1980 from the University of Glasgow, Glasgow, U.K.From 1981 to 1982 he was a Royal Society of London postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway, where he was engaged in studies on the effects of stress on fish assemblages in the Oslofjord. From 1982 to 1986 he was a Project Associate at the Center for Limnology, University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was engaged in two projects, one on the early life history dynamics of Lake Michigan fish, and the second on laboratory and field investigations of ocean acoustics. The acoustical work was with Dr. Clay, Dr. Stanton, and Dr. Magnuson. At present he is an associate faculty member at the University of Maine, Orono, undertaking research on herring population estimates using acoustics and more general studies on fish ecology in the Gulf of Maine.
