Michael G. Parsons graduated from the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1963. While in the Navy, he completed his M.S. degree in the mechanical engineering night program at The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. In 1969, he enrolled in a doctoral program in applied mechanics, specializing in automatic control, at Stanford University, Stanford, CA, earning the Ph.D. degree in 1972.

He was commissioned in the U. S. Navy in 1963 and served at the Naval Ship Systems Command Code 08/Atomic Energy Commission Division of Naval Reactors for six years, working in surface ship nuclear propulsion plant design, In 1972, he joined the faculty of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, University of Michigan, as an Assistant Professor. In 1977, he was named Associate Professor. In 1981, he was named Chairman of the department, serving 10 years. In 1982, he was named Professor. In 1987, he assumed additional duties as the Director of the Michigan Sea Grant College Program, serving five years. In 1991, he was named Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education for the College of Engineering. His teaching has been in marine engineering, hydrodynamics, dynamics, and ship design. His research activity has been in marine engineering, vibration analysis, automatic control, propeller design, computer-aided design, and tribology.

Dr. Parsons is a Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
