Stephen V. Letcher was born in Chicago, IL. He received the B.S. degree from Trinity College, Hartford, CT, in 1957 and the Ph.D. degree from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1964.Most of his professional career has been spent at the Physics Department of the University of Rhode Island (Assistant Professor 1963-1969, Associate Professor 1969-1975, and Professor 1975-present), where his research interests have included ultrasonic propagation in liquid metals and liquid crystals, dynamic properties of liquid crystals, and acousto-optic conversion devices.
Dr. Letcher is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, having served on its Technical Committee on Physical Acoustics, as Co-Chairman for Facilities and Arrangements for the 95th Meeting in Providence, RI, and as Treasurer, Vice-Chairman, and Chairman of the Narragansett Chapter. As a member of the American Physical Society, he has served on the Executive Committee of its New England Section. In addition, Dr. Letcher holds memberships in the American Association of Physics Teachers, Sigma Xi, and Sigma Pi Sigma.
