Clifford G. Y. Lau (SM'87) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1978, all in electrical engineering and computer science.

Prior to 1978, he was employed as an electronics engineer at the Pacific Missile Test Center, Point Mugu, CA, and worked on electronic countermeasure techniques, missile navigation, guidance, and control. From 1978 to 1980, he was on the faculty of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery, University of California at Los Angeles, and did research on the vestibular and oculomotor systems. From 1980 to 1988 he was with the ONR Western Regional Office, and was involved in microelectronic circuits, VLSI systems, and signal processing. He was the Chairman of the Design, Architecture. Software, and Testing Committee for the DoD Very High Speed Integrated Circuits program. He is presently a Scientific Officer at the Electronics Division, Office of Naval Research, and is responsible for the management of basic research programs in VLSI algorithms and architectures for signal processing, VLSI reliability, ultradependable multiprocessor computers, and electronic neural networks. He has published technical papers on a wide range of topics, including equivalent networks, control system instability, wafer scale integration, VLSI reliability, vestibuloocular system models, and neural networks. He is the coeditor of a recent book, An Introduction to Neural and Electronic Networks (Academic Press, 1990), and is the editor of the IEEE PRESS book, Neural Networks: Theoretical Foundations and Analysis (1992).

Dr. Lau has been as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems (1990-1991) and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks (1992-present). He is an elected member of the IEEE CAS Board of Governors.
