Rodney F. W. Coates (M'81-SM'86) was born in Southampton, U.K., on March 28, 1944. He received the B.S. degree from the University of Southampton in 1965 and the Ph.D. degree from the Queen's University, Belfast, U.K., in 1968, where he specialized in computer modeling of communication systems.
He began an academic career in 1968 as a Lecturer at the University of London, London, U.K. In 1971, he was appointed to the staff of the University College of North Wales, Bangor. In 1985, he joined the University of East Anglia as Head of Electronics and Professor of Electronic Systems Engineering. In 1991, he joined the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, U.K., as Professor of Electronics. During this period, his research specialties focused on underwater acoustic communications, computer modeling, and design of high-quality acoustic transducers. He took early retirement in 1996 and is now Director of Seiche, Ltd., a company specializing in advanced research projects in underwater acoustics. His current interests lie in monitoring the acoustic vocalizations of cetaceans, assessment of array signatures, and the design and calibration of velocity hydrophones. He is the author of Modern Communication Systems and Applied Underwater Acoustics (London, U.K.: Macmillan). He is the author of numerous papers on communication engineering, oceanographic instrumentation and underwater acoustics.
