Michael D. Richardson received the B.S. degree in oceanography from University of Washington in 1967, the M.S. degree in marine science from the College of William and Mary in 1971, and the Ph.D. degree in oceanography from Oregon State University in 1976.

Dr. Richardson began working at the Naval Research and Development Activity, now part of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), located at the Stennis Space Center, MS, in 1977. Except for a five-year assignment as principal scientist at NATO's SACLANTCEN in La Spezia, Italy (185-89), he has worked at NRL as a senior scientist and is currently head of the Geoacoustic and Geotechnique section in the Marine Geosciences Division. He is also the chief scientist of Office of Naval Research sponsored Coastal Benthic Boundary Layer program. Research interests include the effects of biological and hydrodynamic processes on sediment structure, behavior, and physical properties near the sediment-water interface both in shallow-water coastal regions and in the deep-sea.

Dr. Richardson is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, American Geophysical Union, European Geophysical Society and Sigma Xi.
