Kenneth R. Hinga was born in Grand Rapids, MI, in 1949. He received the B.S. degree in biology from Purdue University, Lafayette, IN, in 1971, the M.S. degree in oceanography in 1974, and the Ph.D. degree in oceanography in 1984, both from the University of RhodeIsland, Kingston, RI.He spent a year as a research scientist at Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory. Then, beginning in 1980 he was a Technical Program Coordinator for the Subseabed Disposal Program at Sandia National Laboratories and has worked part-time for the program out of the University of Rhode Island since 1982. His research activities have included studies on community energetics in the open ocean and the fate of persistent organic compounds in coastal ecosystems.
