Alexandra Tolstoy received the B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics from George Washington University, Washington, DC, and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland, College Park.
She has been a Senior Scientist with Integrated Performance Decisions, Inc., Annandale, VA, since November 1994 and was previously at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC (May 1980 until October 1994), where she was Head of the Matched Field Inversion Section. Recent work has involved solutions for environmental inverse problems using matched-field processing (MFP) and predictions for the behavior of VLF radio waves. She is the author of the monograph Matched Field Processing for Underwater Acoustics (Singapore: World Scientific, 1993), has authored or co-authored over 70 publications, and has contributed to the Time-Life Series: How Things Work--OCEANS. She developed an ocean acoustic MFP tomography technique for which she holds two patents, and she is also an Editor of the Journal of Computational Acoustics.
Dr. Tolstoy is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a member of the Americal Physical Society, the American Geophysical Union, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Sigma Xi, the Association of Women Geophysicists, the Association of Women Mathematicians, the Association of Women in Science, and Women in Science and Engineering. In 1988, she was co-winner of the Alan Berman publication award.
