Thomas B. Sanford received the A.B. degree in Physics from Oberlin College in 1962, and the Ph.D. degree in Physical Oceanography from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967.For 12 years he was on the scientific staff of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, engaged in oceanographic research and instrumentation development. He joined the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington in 1979 as Senior Oceanographer, with a joint appointment as Research Professor in the University's Department of Oceanography. As Principal Oceanographer at the Laboratory since 1981, he is involved in measurement and interpretation of motionally induced electric and magnetic fields in the deep sea and within channels.
For his paper (with R.G. Drever) describing a free-fall velocity profiler based on the principles of motional induction, he received the 1971 A.F. Bulgin Premium of the Institute of Electronic and Radio Engineers (London). He was awarded (also with R.G. Drever) a U.S. patent covering current measurements by geomagnetic induction. He serves as a consultant to several research and development organizations.
