Peter D. Thorne was born on December 26, 1953. He received the first-class degree in physics from the University of York, England, in 1976 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Bath, England, in 1982.

Between 1977 and 1980, he carried out research work on underwater acoustic backscattering from randomly rough surfaces at the University of Bath. Between November 1980 and 1985, he was at the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, Taunton, England, conducting research into the development of acoustic techniques for the measurement of marine sediment transport. At present, he is with the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, where be is carrying out work on the use of acoustics for measuring suspended sediment processes.

Dr. Thorne was awarded the Chesterman Memorial Medal in 1982, and the A. B. Wood Medal by the Institute of Acoustics in 1986.
