Arthur B. Joyal was born in Providence, RI. He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering with an industrial engineering option from the University of Rhode Island (URI), Kingston, in 1958. He pursued graduate work at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and URI in mechanical engineering, and then received the Masters degree in business administration from URI in 1967.He spent several years as a Structural Test Engineer with the Raytheon Company Airborne Electronics Laboratory and was involved with aircraft radomes. In 1960 he joined the Raytheon Company Equipment Division as a Designer of acoustic sensing components for surface ships and submarines. He then progressed to the Reliability organization within the Submarine Signal Division as a Lead Engineer in the design review of new sonar systems for attack submarines. He next served as a Manager in the company's Ocean Systems Department and had lead mechanical design responsibility for maritime propulsion plant monitoring systems and offshore telemetry ocean sensing systems. He is presently a Principal Engineer on the staff of the Mechanical Engineering Department in the Submarine Signal Division and is involved in new-generation large-sonar-array development. He holds several patents in the marine field.
