Thomas M. McKenna (AM'88) received the B.S. degree in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971, and the Ph.D. degree in neurophysiology from the University of North Carolina in 1979.From 1971 to 1975 he was a research assistant at the Harvard Medical School. From 1982 to 1988 he was on the research faculty of the University of California at Irvine where he conducted research on the auditory cortex and neural modelling. Since 1988 he has been a scientific officer with the Office of Naval Research. He comanaged portions of the DARPA neural networks program, including the comparative performance of neural networks on sonar signal classification. He is currently program manager of the Computational Neuroscience program within the Cognitive and Neural Sciences Division. He is responsible for the management of basic research programs in neural networks, computational neuroscience, bioacoustics, computational vision, and sensory and motor systems for robotics and locomotion. He is a member of the Machinery Diagnostics Working Group within ONR. He is the coeditor of the recent books, Single Neuron Computation (Academic Press, 1992), and Biological Neural Networks in Invertebrate Neuroethology and Robots (Academic Press, in press).
