Michael J. Buckingham was born in Oxford, England, in 1943. He was an undergraduate at the University of Reading, England, where he received the honours degree in physics in 1967. He pursued postgraduate research in solid-state device physics at the same university, for which he received the Ph.D. degree in 1971, and continued in the same department as a post-doctoral fellow working on the detection of gravitational radiation. For this he was jointly awarded the Clerk Maxwell premium by the IERE in 1972.In 1974 he joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, England, to work on underwater acoustics. While still associated with RAE, he recently spent two years as an Exchange Scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC.
Dr. Buckingham has published many papers on solid-state physics and underwater acoustics, and has recently published a book on noise in solid-state devices. For his contributions to ocean acoustics he was awarded the A. B. Wood Medal for 1982 by the Institute of Acoustics. He is a member of the IEE, the ASA, and Sigma Xi.
