Juan I. Arvelo (M'91) was born in Brooklyn, NY. He received the B.S. degree in physics (magna cum laude, Enrico Fermi award) from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, PR, in 1982 and the Ph.D. in applied physics from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, in 1990.

He has 15 years of experience in acoustics research, system performance evaluation, signal processing, real-time high-fidelity simulation and modeling, data analysis and interpretation, and formulation of mathematical models to study environmental and physical effects on detection and communication systems. He served nine years as a Research Physicist for the acoustic signal processing branch of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, White Oak, MD, and five years as Senior Research Scientist for Alliant Techsystems, Inc., in Arlington, VA. He is currently a Senior Staff Scientist for the submarine technology department of the Johns Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, MD.

Dr. Arvelo is a member of the American Institute of Physics and the Acoustical Society of America.
