Guillermo C. Gaunaurd (M'82-SM'83) received the Ph.D. degree in physics/acoustics from Catholic University, Washington, D.C., in 1971.He is a Senior Research Physicist in the Structures and Materials Directorate, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, White Oak, Silver Spring, MD, where he is currently a group leader. He has been with NSWC since 1971 specializing on the scattering interaction of electromagnetic, acoustic and elastic waves with materials and structures. His research program over the years has mainly dealt with radiation and scattering problems of classical physics, Mechanics of Deformable Media, and Fluid-Structure interactions. He has been a part-time Lecturer at the School of Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, since 1984. He has authored over one hundred journal articles and over three hundred conference presentations and technical talks. He has delivered scores of invited lectures and keynote presentations at scientific meetings and universities, and has organized or co-organized numerous special sessions as well as entire scientific conferences.
Dr. Gaunaurd is a member of various professional and honor societies such as the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Academy of Mechanics, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, the Washington Society of Engineers, and the International Union of Mathematical Physics. His professional biography is listed in American Men of Science, Marquis' Who's Who in America, and a dozen other similar books. He has received numerous internal and external awards for technical accomplishments. He has been Guest Editor of the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC ENGINEERING, and in 1992 he was appointed Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ULTRASONICS, FERROELECTRICS AND FREQUENCY CONTROL, developing the area of "Elastic Wave Phenomena." He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the Washington Academy of Sciences. He is an active reviewer for various journals and evaluating Boards, a member of several technical committees in professional societies, and has collaborated in many papers with scores of scientists from all over the world.
