John A. Orcutt was born in Holyoke, Colorado, on August 29, 1943. He received his B.S. degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, in physics and mathematics in 1966, the M.Sc. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, England, in 1968, and the Ph.D. degree in earth sciences from the University of California, San Diego, in 1976.During the period 1967-1973 he served in the U.S. Navy on the ballistic missile submarines SSBN 644, USS Lewis and Clark, and SSBN 642, USS Kamehameha. He was the Sonar Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant on the USS Lewis and Clark and Chief Engineer on the USS Kamehameha. He has been at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography since 1973 and is presently Professor of Geophysics and Director of the La Jolla Branch of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP).
Dr. Orcutt is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the American Geophysical Union, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He is the Seismology and Tectonophysics Editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research and is the Chairman of the Navy Panel of the National Research Council Ocean Studies Board. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the United Kingdom in 1966-1967 and received the AAAS Newcomb-Cleveland Prize in 1980.
