J. P. Stoner was born in Darking, U.K., in 1964. He received the B.Sc. degree in natural sciences from Durham University in 1986 and the M.Sc. degree in knowledge-based systems from the Computing Department of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K., in 1988.
Since then, he has been a Research Associate at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering working under the auspices of the Automation of Subsea task initiative. His primary area of research is the automatic interpretation of sector scan sonar images. Other research interests include robotics, particularly, legged robots, and computer vision.
