William E. Farrell was born in Brooklyn, New York, in February, 1941. He received the B.S degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1962, and the M.Sc. degree in physics from the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1964. He received the Ph.D. degree in earth sciences from the University of California, San Diego, in 1970.From 1970 to 1975 he was affiliated with the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) of the University of Colorado, first as a Visiting Fellow, then as a Fellow. From 1975 to 1978 he was an Assistant Professor of Engineering Geoscience in the Department of Materials Science and Mineral Engineering of the University of California, Berkeley. Between 1978 and 1985 he was with Systems, Science and Software, and since 1985 he has been with Science Applications International Corporation, La Jolla, CA.
Dr. Farrell is a member of Sigma Xi and the American Geophysical Union. He received the Kirk Bryan Award of the Geological Society of America in 1980.
