Grant E. Hearn received the degree in industrial mathematics from the Bath University of Technology, U.K., in 1970 and the M.Sc. in applied mathematics from Sheffield University, U.K., in 1971.
He is Professor of Hydrodynamics, the previous Head of the Department of Marine Technology and the Centre Coordinator for Marine Technology-related research at Newcastle University. Following periods as a Research Fellow in mathematics at Sheffield University and Naval Architecture at Strathclyde University, he joined the British Ship Research Association in 1976. There, he was quickly promoted to Head of the Mathematics Group. He joined the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., as a Lecturer in 1978. His industrial experience includes working as a mathematician in aircraft flight and control, optical telecommunication systems and glass technology. His current research interests include hydrodynamics, seakeeping and maneuverings, design, and the applications of neural networks and genetic algorithms to ship design and control problems. He is the Research Manager for the U.K. ship maneuverability program MOSES based at Newcastle, Glasgow, and Southampton Universities.
