John L. Backes (S'80-M'82), received the B.S. degree in biology from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1976, the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1977, and the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1983.

From 1976 to 1978 he was a Laboratory Manager with TRACOR/TRALAB, Menlo Park, CA. For the past six years he has been at the Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington, working as an electrical engineer on the development of deep ocean tracking, telemetry, control, and data-acquisition systems.
