Erwin Schanda (SM'68-F'83) was born in Austria in 1931. He received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering (Dipl.Ing.) from Vienna Technical University, in 1957, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in applied physics.He joined Philips Laboratories, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for research and development on ferrimagnetic material and its applications to microwaves. Since 1964, he has been at the University of Bern where he initiated a research activity on solar radio astronomy and microwave remote sensing. He became Associate Professor in 1975, and Full Professor and Head of the Institute of Applied Physics in 1976. He is editor and coauthor of two books, one of which is Remote Sensing for Environmental Sciences (Springer, 1976). He has organized international meetings on "Solar Radio Astronomy" and on "Microwave Scattering and Emission from the Earth" (1974) and edited the Proceedings of these meetings. He was co-chairman of the scientific committees of the URSI Symposia "Signature Problems in Microwave Remote Sensing of the Surface of the Earth" 1981 in Lawrence, KS, and "Microwave Signatures in Remote Sensing" 1984 in Toulouse, France.
Prof. Schanda is a member of the IAU and of the EPS, and a corresponding member of the International Academy of Astronautics.
