Ramon Cabrera was born in the Canary Islands, Spain, in 1955. He received the B.S. degree in physics from Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1979, and the M.S. degrees in ocean engineering and computer science, both from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, in 1984 and 1985, respectively.

After receiving the B.S. degree, he worked as Oceanographer at the Venezuelan Institute for Petroleum Technology (INTEVEP). While in Hawaii, he worked as a Research Associate at the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR). In 1987, he went to work for RD Instruments, San Diego, CA, where he became Vice President of Engineering. In 1992, he co-founded SonTek, Inc., where he developed a number of acoustic instruments, including the acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), the acoustic Doppler profiler (ADP), and the single-beam coherent Doppler sonar (DopBeam).
