Jean-Louis Berrou was born in Guiclan, France, in 1947. He received the diploma of engineer in solid state physics and optics from Ecole Superieure d'Optique de Paris-Orsay, France, in 1971. He is presently preparing a Ph.D. thesis on spectral analysis at the University of Nice, Nice, France.From 1972 to 1975 he worked as an R&D Engineer at GESMA, Brest, France, on designing and testing of optical and acoustic imagers. From 1977 to 1984 he was a Scientist at Saclant ASW Research Centre, La Spezia, Italy, where he conducted acoustic measurements with vertical and horizontal acoustic arrays, and developed techniques for towed array monitoring as well as signal-processing methods for high-resolution beam forming and ambiguity resolution. Since 1985 he has been working as an R&D Engineer at Thomson-CSF ASM Laboratory, Cagnes-sur-Mer, France.
