F. Yates Sorrell was born in Wadesboro, NC, on July 14, 1938. He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University in 1960. His graduate degrees are in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology, receiving the M.S. degree in 1961 and the Ph.D. degree in 1966.His professional experience includes a year as a Research Engineer with Pratt & Whitney aircraft, between the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. He then spent two years as an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering Science at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and 22 years at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, where he is currently Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Science. His research activity has been in high altitude atmospheric fluid mechanics, including strong shock waves in gases, environmental fluid mechanics, and applied energy systems. His recent work is in thermal and flow analysis of microelectronic manufacturing processes and on strong shock propagation in porous and reacting solids. He has published over 50 papers and holds 2 patents.
