Thomas G. Muir (M'95) attended The University of Texas at Austin and earned the B.S. in physics in 1961, the M.A. degree in physics in 1965, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering in 1971.He has been associated with this university's Applied Research Laboratories (ARL:UT) since 1961, where he has done research on nonlinear acoustics, naval sonar, and military seismology. He was assigned to NATO's SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, La Spezia, Italy, from 1986 to 1989, where he did research on sea floor seismology. He is presently Assistant Director of ARL:UT for Basic Research and Educational Programs.
Dr. Muir is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the (British) Institute of Acoustics, and is the new Associate Editor for Seismo-acoustics and Geophysics of the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEAN ENGINEERING. He is a member of the U.S. Naval Institute, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. In 1990, he received the Lloyd Jeffress Award at ARL:UT and in 1992, he received the Bronze Medal of the American Defense Preparedness Association.
