Ole A. Mathison received university training in both Norway and the United States. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Washington, Seattle.

He served as a Faculty Member of the University of Washington, studying the population dynamics of marine and anadromous populations of fish. He initiated formation of an interdisciplinary marine acoustics group where engineers, theoretical acousticians, and biologists combined forces to solve fish assessment problems. He is currently Dean of the School of Fisheries and Science at the University of Alaska, Juneau.
