James M. Hamilton received the B.Sc. (Honors Physics) degree from Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, in 1980, and the M.Sc. (Oceanography) from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1991.

He has been employed as a Physical Scientist in the Metrology Division of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography since 1982, specializing in the development of ocean moorings and the study of ocean mixing processes.
