James F. Bartram (S'50-A'52-M'56-SM'59) was born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 18, 1926. He received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 1950 and 1951, respectively.

From 1951 to 1956, he was a member of the Technical Staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he worked on problems in communications switching. He worked briefly at G. C. Dewey and Co., Inc., Westinghouse, and IT&T on problems in radar and satellite communications. In 1961 he joined the Submarine Signal Division of Raytheon Company where he is a Consulting Engineer and a member of the Senior Technical Staff. He has been involved in a number of theoretical studies in the fields of nonlinear acoustics and acoustic signal processing, including bearing tracking.

Mr. Bartram was Vice-Chairman of the Oceans '81 Technical Program Committee, representing the IEEE. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and is listed in American Men and Women of Science.
