David J. McLaughlin (S'82-M'89) was born in Haverhill, MA, on August 30, 1962. He received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1984 and 1989, respectively. His doctoral dissertation was titled "Remote Sensing the Ocean Surface with C- and Ku- Band Airborne Scatterometers.He was employed at the Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL), ECE Department, University of Massachusetts, from June 1983, until September, 1989, first as an undergraduate research assistant and then as a graduate research assistant, carrying out research in microwave scattering phenomenology and remote sensing radar system development. In September, 1989, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, as an Assistant Professor. During the summers of 1990 and 1991, he was an A.S.E.E. summer faculty research fellow at the Radar Division, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC, where he developed polarimetric radar technology for studying low grazing angle sea clutter. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in remote sensing, radar systems, linear systems, electromagnetics, and computer programming, and has developed an experimental radar research program at Northeastern University. His research interests are microwave remote sensing, polarimetric scattering and propagation phenomenology, radar oceanography, and advanced radar systems. He has served as principal investigator on numerous radar, remote sensing, and electromagnetic scattering studies sponsored by the U.S. Air Force, the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Research Laboratory, and the U.S. Army.
Dr. McLaughlin is a member of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Antennas and Propagation, Aerospace and Electronic Systems, and Ocean Engineering Societies, as well as the American Geophysical Union, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu. He is currently serving as chairman of the New England Section, Boston Chapter of the Antennas and Propagation Society of IEEE.
