Neil L. Brown (M'81) was born in Australia in 1927 and immigrated to the United States in 1962. He received the B.E. degree from Sydney Technical College, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia, in 1951.He was first employed at the Australian National Standards Laboratory (C.S.I.R.O. Div. of Electrotechnology) from 1946 to 1956 and subsequently at the Division of Fisheries and Oceanography, where he first became involved in the development of oceanographic instruments. In 1959 he first came to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as a Visiting Investigator for two years, where he worked on the development of the STD. He subsequently joined the Bissett-Berman Corporation as director of research, where he was responsible for the development of their oceanographic instrument products, including the STD. In 1969 he returned to Woods Hole as a full-time employee where he developed the CTD. He formed his own company (Neil Brown Instrument Systems Inc.) in 1974 to manufacture the CTD system and other oceanographic instrumants developed by his company. This company was subsequently acquired by E.G.&G. Inc. in 1984 and is now part of the EG&G Ocean Products, where he continues as Senior Scientist.
In 1980 Mr. Brown was awarded the IEEE Council on Oceanic Engineering 1980 Distinguished Technical Contribution Award.
