Nicholas Allan (S'90-M'95) was born in Stockton-on-Tees, U.K., on January 9, 1965. He received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from the University of Kent, Canterbury, U.K., in 1986, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, in 1991, and the Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Northeastern University, Boston, MA, in 1995.

From 1986 to 1987, he was a Digital Design Engineer with Plessey Microsystems, where he developed custom computer systems. He held both teaching and research assistantships with the ECE Department at the University of Massachusetts and a research assistantship with the Radar Systems laboratory (RSL), ECE Department, Northeastern University. At RSL, he collaborated with personnel from the Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Radar Division, Washington, DC, to develop and calibrate a high-resolution (1.5 m) X-band polarimetric radar for remotely sensing the ocean surface. He led a team of engineers and technicians installing this radar aboard the USNS Bartlett to study the radar signature of small-scale oceanic fronts along the northern boundary of the Gulf Stream in 1994. He joined SFA, Inc., where he was a Research Engineer working as a Contractor with NRL's Remote Sensing Division. In this position, he developed a new dual-beam Doppler radar for remotely sensing the velocity of the ocean surface. He used this system to study vector velocity variations across the surface manifestation of the Chesapeake Bay outflow plume. He recently joined NRL's Remote Sensing Division, where he is an Electronics Engineer. His research interests include microwave remote sensing, radar oceanography, advance radar systems, and radar signal processing.
