David E. Weissman (S'60-M'61-SM'76) received the B.E.E. and M.E.E. degrees from New York University, New York, NY, in 1960 and 1961, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1968.From 1961 to 1963 he was with Dome & Margolin, Inc., Westbury, NY where he was involved in antenna and microwave component design. He joined the Stanford Research Institute (presently named SRI International), Menlo Park, CA, as a Research Engineer in 1963. His research activities there involved the study of linear and nonlinear electromagnetic interactions with plasmas and the development of radar remote sensing techniques. He is presently a Professor of Engineering at Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY, where he has served on the faculty since 1968. Since 1970 he has been actively involved in the development of radar measurements of ocean surface properties from aircraft, spacecraft, and tower platforms. During the 1975-1976 year he was on leave and held a NASA-NRC Senior Research Associateship at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. His contributions to the development of microwave remote sensing of the ocean have been conducted in association with colleagues at the NASA Langley Research Center, JPL, and the Naval Research Laboratory.
Dr. Weissman served the IEEE Council on Oceanic Engineering as Secretary from 1976 to 1979. He served the IEEE JOURNAL OF OCEANIC ENGINEERING as Associate Editor from 1976 to 1979, and as Editor-in-Chief from 1979 to 1982. He is presently a member of the ADCOM of the Oceanic Engineering Society and Chairman of the Remote Sensing Technical Committee. In 1977 he received the Best Applications Paper Award (with co-author J. W. Johnson) from the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPOATION. He has published numerous Journal articles and has participated in many national and international Conferences. He received an IEEE Centennial Medal in 1984. In 1983 he served as Co-Technical Chairman of the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in San Francisco, CA. He is also a member of URSI (Commission F), the American Geophysical Union, the AAUP, and the New York Academy of Sciences.
