William C. Boicourt, a physical oceanographer at the Chesapeake Bay Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, has been measuring currents on the continental shelf and in the estuary in the attempt to decipher shallow-water circulation processes. Trained at Amherst College and Johns Hopkins, he has pursued interests in the mechanisms of exchange between shelf and slope waters off the east coast of the United States and in the details of topographically induced estuarine circulations. Part of this effort has been devoted to the improvement and evaluation of current measuring techniques in the upper layers of the ocean where wave and mooring motion threaten the accuracy of Eulerian measurements.
