Sergei Kashin is a biologist who graduated from Moscow State University in 1962. His Ph.D. thesis titled "Fish Locomotion and Organization of Body Muscles" was defended in 1971. His interests are essentially in neural control, muscular morphology, and kinematics of fish swimming. He has worked with Dr. Sten Grillner at the Karolinnska Institution in Stockholm, Sweden. During his work in the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow, he took part in several ecological expeditions including some to the Amazon River. At present he is at the Marine Systems Engineering Laboratory, Marine Science Center at Northeastern University.
