Lee A. Powell received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1965 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.Since 1965 he has been the Electrical Engineer on the staff of the Geophysical and Polar Research Center, University of Wisconsin (UW), Madison, and is responsible for the design, operation and maintenance of equipment for the entire research process, from data gathering to analysis. He recently designed the UW's digital seismograph, integrating the use of the Omega navigation system for timing and location, and has also designed portable, programmed FM-recording seismographs, and equipment for other research techniques: Vibroseis reflection and refraction; marine high-resolution sonic, magnetic, and electronic profiling; and marine refraction with sonobuoys and radio-controlled FM-recording buoys. He has participated in research experiments in Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and throughout the U.S. Data analysis equipment designed and constructed by him includes an error-correcting, solid-state CPU memory, and interfaces to many of the computer peripherals, including an interactive color graphics subsystem, digital and analog field tape processors, plotters, and multiport terminals.
