Joel Lipkin received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, (1965), and the M.S. (1967) and Ph.D. (1970) degrees in solid mechanics from Brown University, Providence, RI.He joined Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM, in 1969 and has been associated with a number of projects in the general area of material response characterization since that time. Between 1979 and 1984 he worked in the Seabed Programs Division at Sandia where he was responsible for coordinating research activities related to the strength and flow of marine sediment under combinations of thermal and mechanical loading.
