Warren W. Denner was born in Portland, OR, in 1938. He received the B.S. degree from Portland State College in 1961. He obtained the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physical oceanography from Oregon State University, Corvallis, in 1963 and 1969, respectively.He worked in ocean turbulence at the Naval Ordnance Test Station as a Physical Oceanographer in 1962 and 1963. Upon obtaining the M.S. degree in 1963, in joined the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska. In 1964 he joined the Faculty of Oceanography and Meteorology at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. His research interests were in underwater acoustics, coastal oceanography, and arctic science. In 1973 he took a leave of absence from the Naval Postgraduate School to become the Director of the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory, a position he held through 1976. In 1978 he was appointed Professor of Oceanography and Ocean Engineering, and Director of the Newfoundland Institute of Cold Ocean Science at Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland. In 1982 he joined Science Applications International Corporation, Monterey, CA. where he is a Senior Scientist and Assistant Vice President in the Applied Environmental Sciences Division. His research continues to focus on Arctic sea ice and acoustics.
Dr. Denner is a member of many professional societies, including Sigma Xi, AAAS, AGU, MTS, AIAA, the Arctic Institute of North America, and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society.
