Matthew F. McCarthy was born in Cork, Ireland, on November 19, 1938. He received the B.Sc. degree in experimental and mathematical physics in 1960 and the M.Sc. degree in mathematical science in 1962, both from University College, Cork, Ireland. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree in theoretical mechanics in 1965 from the University of Nottingham, Nottingham, England, and the D.Sc. degree from the National University of Ireland, Galway, in 1972.He was Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Nottingham from 1962 to 1965. From 1965 to 1973 he was Lecturer in Mathematical Physics at University College, Galway, and has been Associate Professor of Mathematical Physics since 1973. He served as Dean of the Science Faculty during the period 1974-1980. His interests include all aspects of wave propagation in elastic and electroelastic media. He has written many papers on nonlinear wave propagation and, more recently, has published in the field of elastic wave scattering.
Dr. McCarthy is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
