H. Vincent Poor (S'72-M'77-SM'82-F'87) was born in Columbus, GA, on October 2, 1951. He received the B.E.E. (with Highest Honor) and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Auburn University, Auburn, AL, in 1972 and 1974, respectively, and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, in 1976 and 1977, respectively.Since 1977 he has been with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where, since 1984, he has been Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Research Professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory. In 1985 he was an Academic Visitor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at London University's Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, England, and he is currently visiting in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. His research interests are primarily in the general area of statistical signal processing in communications and control, with emphasis on the particular problems of robustness in signal detection, estimation, and filtering; processing techniques for multiple-access communications; quantization of inferential data; and modeling of nonstandard noise environments. He is the author of numerous publications in these areas including the book An Introduction to Signal Detection and Estimation (Springer-Verlag, 1987), a coeditor (with Ian F. Blake) of the volume Communications and Networks: A Survey of Recent Advances (Springer-Verlag, 1986), and the editor of the JAI Press series Advances in Statistical Signal Processing. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the new Springer-Verlag journal, Mathematics of Control, Systems and Signals. He serves regularly as a consultant in the areas of signal processing, digital communications, and radar systems for several industrial and governmental clients.
Dr. Poor is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi. He has served in several official capacities in various local, regional, and international IEEE organizations. From 1981 to 1982 he was Associate Editor for Estimation of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and from 1982 to 1985 he was Associate Editor for Detection and Estimation of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. He is currently serving as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Group, of which he was Treasurer from 1983 to 1985. He served as Program Chairman for the 25th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control held in Athens, Greece, in December 1986.
