E. D. Ramsay Shearman (SM'66-F'82) received the B.Sc.(Eng.) degree from Imperial College, England, in 1945.In 1947, after earlier work with the Admiralty Signal Establishment on HF communication, he joined the Radio Research Station of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, where his research included ionospheric propagation sounding and an extensive investigation, during the period 1949-1960, of the mechanism and applications of HF skywave backscatter. In 1960, he was U.K. member of the design team of the Canadian Allouette topside ionospheric sounding satellite. From 1962, first as Senior Lecturer in Electromagnetism at the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England, and then as Professor, he led research on radiocommunication, radar meteorology, antennas, and skywave radar, before initiating in 1976 the radar oceanography research at Birmingham (later joined by the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory) reported here. He is now Head of the Postgraduate School in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the University of Birmingham.
Professor Shearman is U.K. member of Commission F of U.R.S.I., Consultant at the Royal Signal and Radar Establishment, was elected Fellow of the Fellowship of Engineering in 1984, and was awarded the Faraday Medal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers for 1986.
