Allan D. Pierce (M'65) was born in Clarinda, IA, on December 18, 1936. He received the B.S. degree in physics with highest honors from New Mexico A&M, Las Cruces (presently New Mexico State University) in January 1957, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from M.I.T., Cambridge, MA, in 1962.During the periods 1961-1963, 1963-1966, and 1966-1973, he was employed by the Rand Corporation, Santa Monica, CA, Avco Corporation, Wilmington, MA, and the Mechanical Engineering Department of M.I.T. He joined Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, in 1973 as Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and was designated a Regents' Professor in 1976. During 1976-1977, he was a guest with the Max Planck Institut für Strömungsforschung in Götingen, Germany. During 1979-1980, he was a Faculty Fellow with the U.S. Department of Transportation. He is the author of a textbook on acoustics.
Dr. Pierce is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and has received the Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, three NSF Fellowships, and a Shell Oil Company Fellowship.
