James Doutt received the B.S. degree in geophysics from the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in 1962, and the M.S. degree in geology from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1966. From 1966 to the present, except for four years at SACLANTCEN from 1972 to 1976, he has been at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA. His recent research has involved shallow water propagation and acoustics of the deep scattering layer.
