Benjamin Friedlander (S'74-M'76-SM'82-F'87) received the B.Sc. and the M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in 1968 and 1972, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and the M.Sc. degree in statistics from Stanford University in 1976.From 1968 to 1972 he served in the Israel Defense Forces as an electronic engineer. From 1976 to 1985 he was at Systems Control Technology, Inc., Palo Alto, CA, as Manager of the Advanced Technology division. He was responsible for a number of research and development projects in the areas of signal processing and control. During this period he was also a lecturer at Stanford University, teaching graduate courses on linear systems, nonlinear detection and estimation, and system identification. From November 1985 to July 1988 he was with Saxpy Computer Corporation, Sunnyvale, CA, as the Director of Advanced Technology. He was responsible for the research and development activities of the company. Currently he is with the University of California at Davis, and Signal Processing Technology, Ltd., Polo Alto, CA. He has over 250 publications in the areas of signal processing and estimation. He was an associate editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON AUTOMATIC CONTROL in 1984, a member of the Administrative Committee of the Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ASSP) society, and a member of the Technical Committee on Spectrum Estimation of the ASSP. He is the Vice Chairman of the bay area chapter of the Signal Processing society, a member of the IEEE admission and advancement committee, an associate editor of the Journal of Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing, and a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing. His current interest include: advanced techniques for array processing and spectral analysis, adaptive filtering, sonar, radar and communication processing, detection tracking and localization of multiple targets, image processing, and parallel processing architectures for high-speed signal processing.
Dr. Friedlander is the recipient of the 1983 ASSP Senior Award for the paper "Recursive Lattice Forms for Spectral Estimation," the 1985 Award for the Best Paper of the Year from the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP) for the paper "On the Computation of an Asymptotic Bound for Estimating Autoregressive Signals in White Noise," and the 1989 Technical Achievement Award of the Signal Processing Society. He is a member of Sigma Xi.
