Robert O. Harger (S'53-M'55-SM'72-F'79) was born in Flint, MI, on September 15, 1932. He received the B.S. degree m mathematics and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering in 1955, 1959, and 1961, respectively, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.From 1955 to 1958 he was a Line Officer in the U.S. Navy. From 1960 to 1968 he was with the University of Michigan in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Science and Technology. Since 1968 he has been with the University of Maryland, College Park, serving as Electrical Engineering Department Chairman from 1975 to 1980. He is the author of Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems (New York: Academic, 1970) and editor of Optical Communication Theory (New York: Dowden, Hutchinson, and Ross, 1977).
Dr. Harger received the 1977 Carlton Award of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society.
