Gerald J. Needell received the B.S. degree in physics from Northeastern University in 1975 and the M.S. in oceanography from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979.

He joined the staff of Woods Hole Oceanographic institution as a research associate in the Physical Oceanography Department. His primary responsibility was data acquisition and processing for the "White Horse" dropsonde measurements during the INDEX and PEQUOD experiments. He later worked on the Buoy Group data processing system. In 1985, he joined the Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire where he developed software to process data from acoustic Doppler current meters and to control microprocessor based instruments. He is presently working for the Experimental Space Physics Laboratory at UNH, where he is developing software to control microprocessor based instruments to be flown on satellites.
