Samuel M. Smith received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in 1991.

He is currently an Associate Professor of Ocean Engineering, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, and Director of the Advanced Marine Systems Laboratory. His general areas of interests include intelligent control systems, autonomous robotics, intelligent distributed control and sensing systems, automated reasoning, and signal processing. Specific areas of expertise are in fuzzy-logic control and decision making. His current research is developing sensing, command, and control systems for autonomous underwater vehicles, along with network control systems for shipboard automation.
