Jeffrey D. Hawkins received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in meteorology from the Florida State University, Tallahassee, in 1976 and 1979, respectively.After graduation, he participated in SEASAT scatterometer validation and air sea interaction studies near hurricanes while working for the Hurricane Research Division, AOML (Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Lab, Miami, FL). In late 1980 he accepted a position as oceanographer in the Remote Sensing Branch of the Naval Ocean Reserach and Development Activity (NORDA, Stennis Space Center, MS). His present duties as Head, Applications Development Section. involve a wide variety of R&D programs aimed at utilizing spaceborne environmental sensors (AVHRR. OLS, GEOSAT altimeter, SSM/I. etc.) to meet specific Navy oceanographic requirements in the areas of sea-surface temperature, sea-surface height, and sea ice.
Mr. Hawkins is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Society, the Oceanography Society, and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.
