Jon M. Campbell received the B.Sc. degree in astronomy and applied mathematics from the University of Leicester, U.K., in 1975 and the M.Sc. degree in systems engineering from the University of Surrey, U.K., in 1985.
He worked in the navigation aids research group at the Trinity House Lighthouse Authority for three years before joining the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences in 1980. His main interests include signal processing and data recording with particular reference to sonar systems. In particular, he has designed a laser filmwriter instrument for producing high-quality sonar images at sea and a towfish attitude-measuring package. He has participated in more than 30 GLORIA cruises, having overall responsibility for the system on many of them. Recently, he has designed an autonomous recording system for a moored, upward-looking sonar instrument.
