Rui J. P. de Figueiredo (S'54-M'59-SM'74-F'76) received the S.B. and S.M. degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from Harvard University, Cambridge.From 1955 to 1959 he carried out several assignments for the Junta de Energia Nuclear and the Junta de Investigações do Ultramar, Portugal, and from 1959 to 1962 he was Chief of Research at the Laboratório de Física e Engenharia Nucleares, Sacavém, Portugal. From 1962 to 1964 and from 1964 to 1965 he held faculty positions, respectively, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Since 1965 he has been a permanent member of the Faculty of Rice University, Houston, TX, where he holds the position of Professor jointly in the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. During the period from 1972 to 1973 he spent a sabbatical leave as Visiting Research Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematics Research Center of the University of Wisconsin at Madison with an interruption in the spring of 1973 to hold the position of Visiting Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California at Berkeley. Also, during the summer of 1981 he held the position of Visiting Professor at the Institute for Telecommunications of the Swiss Federal Institute, E.T.H., Zurich, Switzerland.
Dr. de Figueiredo has published a number of research papers on linear and nonlinear system analysis and identification, approximation theory with emphasis on spline functions, signal processing, and pattern recognition. He is also a coeditor and author of the book Concepts and Techniques in Oil and Gas Exploration (Society of Exploration Geophysicists, Oct. 1982). He has served as a consultant in signal and image processing to the petroleum industry. He is also a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
