John Walsh received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Halifax, NS, Canada, in 1968 and the Ph.D. from the University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada, in 1971.He worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal, PQ, Canada, from 1971 to 1972. In 1972, he joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NF, Canada, where he is presently working as a Professor. In addition to this professorship, he holds the position of Adjunct Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, is Technical Director of the Remote Sensing Group at the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering (C-CORE), and is Vice-President of Research and Development for Northern Radar Systems Limited at St. John's. His early research involved analysis of transmission lines and antenna systems. His major accomplishments include the development of analytical techniques for the propagation and scatter from rough surfaces, mixed paths and layered media, and the application of the results in ground wave radar detection of ocean surface parameters and surface targets. He is the author or coauthor of 40 refereed open-literature technical papers and 10 major technical reports.
